If you’ve ever considered helping out at a local or national animal shelter or rescue, now would be the perfect time. Many, if not all, are currently feeling the impact of the economy. There are more homeless pets now than ever, due to foreclosures, job loss and countless other reasons that are causing people to have to give up their beloved companions.
And sure, it's nice to be able to give a nice donation, but helping a shelter or rescue doesn’t just mean giving money. Almost all of them will be more than happy to have some of your time whenever you can spare it. Besides, let's face it–if there's one thing these organizations are always in need of aside from money, it's volunteers.
Cleaning cages and pens, washing a few loads of shelter laundry, transporting animals to foster care or forever homes, helping with fundraisers, dropping off or picking up from vet visits, doing a home visit for potential new homes, crafting items to donate for fundraising, fostering a homeless cat, dog or other animal, the list goes on and is forever endless.
To get started, simply think of what kind of rescue or shelter you would like to help. It can be a local one, a national one, cats only, dogs only or breed specific. Ask your vet or search online to find the one that suits you. Check out the rescue or shelter and make sure it's legitimate and that its mission is the same as yours. Do you agree with its practices and guidelines? Will you support its efforts? If it's a yes, reach out to them and see how you can get involved.
Oh, and don't worry about not knowing enough. Having been involved with animal rescue efforts for over 10 years, I am still learning things as I go. Sometimes it's overwhelming, but with others there to guide you along and be there for questions and support when you need them, it makes giving your time for a good cause that much easier.
So, give volunteering some thought. The experience is not only rewarding, but also benefits the animals in need more than anyone could ever imagine.
